With the widespread integration of high proportions of renewable energy and electronic equipment into the grid, issues concerning voltage and frequency stability as well as wideband oscillations have become increasingly prominent in new power systems. Grid-forming serves as a key technology for ensuring grid stability and balance, underpinning the safe and stable operation of new power systems. Based on power devices, control devices, digital technology, algorithms, and communication technologies, East has developed six core grid-forming technologies: ① short-circuit current support, ② virtual inertia support, ③ wideband oscillation suppression, ④ primary frequency regulation, ⑤ black start, and ⑥ grid-connected/off-grid switching. These technologies provide scenario-based technical support for the grid integration of high-proportion renewable energy.
■ On the power generation side, grid-forming energy storage can enhance the grid strength at the grid connection point and significantly improve photovoltaic power transmission capacity. It provides solutions to challenges such as low grid strength and insufficient short-circuit capacity at the grid connection point.
■ On the power generation side, grid-forming energy storage enables renewable energy sources to exhibit equivalent external characteristics to thermal power units through deep integration with solar energy storage systems, delivering constant-power, high-quality, stable electricity supply.
■ On the transmission and distribution side, grid-forming technology supports faster frequency regulation response, strengthens grid support capability, and ensures power supply security and quality. By optimizing the grid-forming control algorithm, the energy storage system’s response deviation to grid frequency changes meets the grid’s stringent requirements for frequency regulation accuracy. Simultaneously, the grid technology exhibits wide operating condition adaptability, enabling uninterrupted frequency regulation service around the clock, significantly improving reliability compared to traditional solutions.
■ On the power consumption side, the grid-forming technology allows for flexible switching between
 on-grid and off-grid access, enhancing grid security and resilience, and facilitating the consumption of new energy sources.

Recently, the core equipment of the Lixin Minfeng County 200MW/800MWh grid-forming independent energy storage project was successfully installed, laying a solid foundation for the project’s grid connection and operation. This landmark energy storage power station, located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has a total investment of approximately 515 million yuan and adopts advanced grid-forming technology. Upon completion, it will significantly improve the peak-shaving capacity of the southern Xinjiang power grid and the level of new energy consumption.

 

Technology innovation: Deep integration of grid-forming and liquid cooling

The 6.7MW/26.8MWh centralized liquid-cooled energy storage system provided by East for this project deeply integrates grid-forming technology, achieving a dual breakthrough in thermal management and grid construction.

Grid-forming capability: from follower to leader

Unlike traditional energy storage systems, East’s grid-forming energy storage system has the ability to actively build grid stability. Through advanced grid-forming algorithms, the system can synchronize with the grid without phase-locked loops, supports grid-connected/off-grid dual-mode operation, and can provide voltage and frequency support during grid faults.

 

Liquid cooling technology ensures precise temperature control for long-term operation.

The system employs efficient intelligent liquid cooling temperature control, strictly controlling the cell temperature difference within 3°C, significantly improving the system’s cycle life, with an expected cycle life exceeding 8000 cycles. Combined with 314Ah large-capacity cells, the system’s energy density is increased by 15%, while the device size is reduced by 25% for the same capacity.

 

Full-stack self-developed, integrated intelligent control

East independently develops all core components, from PACK and PCS to BMS and EMS. AC/DC side coordination improves capacity utilization by 10%, achieving a system conversion efficiency of up to 99%. The intelligent SOC balancing strategy effectively reduces inconsistencies between battery clusters, increasing total discharge capacity by 15% over the entire battery lifecycle.

 

The cornerstone of intelligent manufacturing: Four major factories ensure efficient delivery

Faced with a tight delivery schedule, East Energy Storage’s four smart manufacturing factories operate in synergy, establishing a comprehensive quality control system. From cell incoming to finished product delivery, multiple quality inspection points are set up to ensure that every delivered product reaches its optimal condition. Production lines operate at full capacity to ensure timely and high-quality equipment delivery.

Project breakthrough: Demonstrating exceptional delivery capabilities in adversity

Since the project was launched, East has assembled a cross-departmental elite team covering R&D, production, and delivery, and is fully committed to advancing the project with the “customer first” philosophy.

The project team was stationed in the Gobi Desert for an extended period, overcoming numerous difficulties such as sandstorms, extreme temperature differences between day and night, and inconvenient material transportation. Through scientific construction organization and meticulous progress control, they ensured seamless coordination of all stages, demonstrating East’s professional delivery capabilities in large-scale energy storage projects.

With the completion of the core equipment hoisting, the project has fully entered the equipment installation and commissioning phase. It is expected that by the end of this year, this “super power bank” in the Gobi Desert will be officially put into operation, injecting green energy into the optimization of the energy structure in southern Xinjiang.
